Development of methods and devices for the evaluation of thoraco-abdominal asynchronies and cough monitoring in patients with neuromuscular disorders

The research program is in the field of respiratory signal processing and development of new devices for the assessment of the respiratory muscle function, for functional evaluation in healthy subjects and neuromuscular diseases. The work will be aimed to develop new methods for the quantification of chest wall asynchronies measured by opto-electronic plethysmography and to develop and validate a new device based on MEMS accelerometer for the continuous monitoring of chest wall movement, with particular attention to spontaneous breathing and cough.Specific objectives will be:- implementation of SW programs for the quantification of chest wall asynchronies and HW development of a new device based on accelerometers;- collaboration with hospitals and research centers for the acquisition of respiratory signals in healthy subjects and patients with muscular dystrophies;- presentation of the obtained results on international scientific peer-reviewed journals
