3D effects in modeling and control of thermonuclear fusion devices

In fusion devices passive and active boundaries interact with the plasma, from the electromagnetic point of view, in a very complex way which is generally far away from the hypothesis of axisymmetry. Nonexclusive examples are eddy currents or halo currents flowing from the edge of the plasma through the surrounding structures. This research project is focused on developing and benchmarking 3D numerical tools for electromagnetic analyses aiming at optimizing the performances of the present RFX-mod magnetic configuration and contributing to the design of its possible new assembly. The research activities will be fully integrated in the research program PRIN 2011 “Three-dimensional, non-linear and multi-physics effects in modelling and control of thermonuclear fusion devices”
