*Subject description:* The evolution of redox conditions in subduction zones is a major challenge for understanding the exchanges of matter "magma-crust-mantle". Fluids released from the subducting oceanic crust recycle lithophile elements back into the mantle wedge, facilitate melting of peridotites, and lead to prolific subduction-zone arc volcanism.
