Antibiotic resistance is an increasing problem that has been compared to climate change in that it is relentless, irreversible and poses a significant risk to human health. It is well known that antibiotic usage in the clinic is responsible for evolution of resistance; however the contribution of antibiotic residues in the aquatic environment to the overall burden of resistance is less well studied.
