Clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) is a fundamental cellular uptake pathway. Its primary function is to specifically internalize certain substances but also permits the regulation of transmembrane signal transduction by transducing signals from the cell periphery to the nucleus and by mediating the internalization of surface exposed membrane receptors.
