Single Molecule Analysis of Virus / Receptor Internalization

Viruses initiate infection by attaching to the target cell using cellular receptors. The molecular mechanisms following virus attachment that promote internalization of the virus/receptor complex are poorly understood. Similarly, it remains unclear how non-enveloped viruses gain access to the cytosol of infected cells as these viruses lack a lipid bilayer and as such cannot fuse with the host membrane.
