Controlled modification of the optical properties of glassy materials by doping with metallic elements

The project aims at exploring the possibilities offered by the ion exchange technique for the modification of the optical properties of silicate glasses (mainly soda-lime and borosilicate). A chemical-physical characterization of glasses doped by ion exchange will be done, exploring several exchange parameters and suitable thermal treatments after the doping. As of today ion exchange in glasses is used mainly for the synthesis of waveguides, but the interesting features of this experimental technique make it useful for several other applications such as the introduction of luminescent doping ions, for altering mechanical strength of the surface, for improving the electrical properties of the glass, and also for introducing color centers. The possibility to give a determined coloration to the glass will be investigated by doping the glass with different metallic elements, exploring pure and mixed molten salt baths
