Optical microscopy is an ideal tool for non-invasive investigation of biological systems with unmatched sensitivity and resolution. In particular, in recent years the development of techniques for localization of single molecules and the reconstructed images of super resolution have opened new perspectives for the study of biological systems. However, the performance of optical systems are often reduced, so also considerable, from aberrations of various kinds, primarily introduced by inhomogeneities in the index of refraction.
