Effect of ionizing radiations on the biology of human and mouse mesenchymal stem cells.

Exposure of Ionizing Radiation (IR) induces DNA damage that may either trigger a neoplastic transformation of target cells or impair their activity triggering senescence and/or apoptosis. Cell senescence, in particular that occurring in stem cell compartments, is considered deleterious because it contributed to decrements in tissue renewal and function. On the other side, senescence may arrest the uncontrolled growth of transformed stem cells and protect organisms from cancer. We want to evaluate if low doses of IR may significantly affect the biology of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) either altering their stemness and differentiation capability and/or triggering transformation phenomena.
