This research project aims to gain insights into the pathogenesis of the aortopathy associated with congenital bicuspid aortic valve malformation. Due to the inherent features of this topic, the present research will necessarily be multidisciplinary in nature, involving non-clinical expertise collaborators (bioengineering, molecular biology, histopathology) and will be dedicated to the identification of possible risk markers (humoral, imaging) for prognostic stratification of bicuspid aortic valve patients, thus representing a paradigm of translational research. The project will include epidemiological studies on the risk and natural history of the bicuspid aortopathy, biomolecular studies on the pathways involved in the early phases of the aortic wall remodelling, imaging studies on the function and biomechanics of the ascending aorta.
