Control and optimization for self-organizing traffic management

Please note that the job is no longer active!

Several solutions for traffic light control have been proposed and are available on the market, mainly centralized systems that try to model and forecast traffic behaviour. Traffic can be seen as a scenario where a multitude of intelligent agents - people driving vehicles - take self-interested decisions based on local information, and congestions are the emerging behaviour of these agents. The COLOMBO project addresses these issues by merging intelligent traffic light control and information from the road infrastructure. Focusing on the traffic light control, the purpose of this research is to view traffic as a complex system considering vehicles as self-organizing agents and to implement a number of swarm intelligence based traffic light control algorithms that improve the traffic flow and reduce congestions. This would deliver a significant positive effect both to the single agent, reducing the waste of time and fuel, and to the environment, reducing emissions, pollution and noise.
