Mechanisms for the prevention of neurotoxic effects

The research is an experimental study to be carried out in vitro in human neuronal cell lines and in primary neurons of mice to evaluate two basic assumptions: 1) chronic exposure to low doses of an environmental contaminant acts ormetico, inducing defense mechanisms that protect the cell against higher exposures; 2) genetic polymorphisms may contribute to the inability to develop such neuroprotective mechanisms, in order to make these individuals at risk for the onset of disease during development (eg autism) or neurodegenerative disorders (eg. Parkinson's disease).
