The diabetic macular edema (EMD) is the main cause of visual loss in diabetic patients. The etiology of EMD is not yet entirely clear. Laser treatment remains the gold standard for the therapy of EMD, despite its proven efficacy in preventing visual loss, offers limited possibilities for improvement and has potential side effects. In light of the limitations of laser treatment and of new knowledge on the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of macular edema new therapeutic modalities are currently under study, such as, for example, the anti-VEGF which act limiting the vascular permeability. Therefore, the aim of our research program is based on a critical review of literature data on the classification, diagnosis and treatment of EMD in order to better understand the pathophysiology of EMD and improve clinical management, and instrumental therapeutic of diabetic patients afferent to the structure
