Laser assisted bending of high-resistance steel sheets

Please note that the job is no longer active!

option of combining light weighting with the traditional steel advantages of low cost and high resistance. Extending high resistance steels applicability in automotive industry can reduce the weight of vehicles improving fuel consumptions and increasing eco-efficiency of vehicles. On the other hand, reduced formability is one of the consequences when selecting steels with higher strength levels. In order to increase the formability of high resistant steel sheets, without reducing production rate, a laser assisted bending system is proposed: laser is used to locally modify the microstructure of the base material increasing its formability with respect to the untreated one. Examples of sheet bending on dual phase and high carbon steels are presented together with the formability comparison between the laser treated and untreated materials.
