The aim of this project is to verify whether the alfaalfahydrolysate-based biostimulant (EM) acts a biostimulant in tomato plants. Morpho-physiological and biochemical parameters, such as root and leaf biomass, changes in root morphology, antioxidant profile and content will be evaluated first. A special attention will be given to the variation of phenol compounds, important antioxidants with free-radical scavenging activities and able to induce the expression of genes encoding enzymes thought to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Other steps of this project will include the identification of the main metabolic pathways regulated by EM in tomato plants. To this aim, the DNA microarrays technique will be used as it represents a powerful tool in functional genomics to monitor gene expression genome-wide. To validate the differential expression of subset genes abundance detected by microarray analysis, RNA will be isolated from tomato plants and Real time-PCR will be performed.
