Since insect genetic transformation was accomplished thirty years ago, a major research goal has been to develop methods to reduce the harm caused by insect disease vectors such as mosquitoes. One approach is to try to make the mosquitoes less able to transmit disease. To apply this to a wild mosquito population requires two components: (i) a gene or genes which will reduce the ability of the mosquitoes to transmit a specific pathogen and (ii) a means of spreading this gene through a wild popula...
