COPD is a chronic and progressive pathologic condition that limits the activities and the everyday wellbeing. The patients with COPD usually are seen for the first time by a pulmonologist in an advanced stage when the intervention does not permit an appreciable result. A concept recently emerging, besides the importance of an early identification of the disease, is that the different pathologic changes that cause COPD - conductive airway disease and parenchymal destruction - may have different therapeutic responses. In this line of evidence the proposed research project is aimed at the development and diffusion of a standardized method, based on first level examinations, that could permit to establish both the severity and the phenotype of COPD as assessed by quantitative CT. The information that could be obtained may permit to treat earlier and with more appropriateness each patient with COPD with possible greatly positive general socio-sanitary effects.
