Oleuropein aglycone (OLE) is a polyphenol typical of the extra virgin olive oil to which, in addition to the anti-oxidant power, several other beneficial properties have been attributed; in our laboratory, we have shown that OLE inhibits the growth of toxic aggregates in vitro by Abeta and amylin, involved in the Alzheimer's and type 2 diabetes, respectively.. We have also observed that OLE stimulates autophagy, a key cellular process which often is activated in the course of amyloid pathologies as a response to protein misfolding but without going to completion due to lysosomes overload thus contributing to disease progression. Accordingly, molecules able to restore the functional course of autophagy are good candidates for prevention and treatment of these diseases.
