Women’s empowerment in the fight against HIV/AIDS and in rural development policies in Mozambique

Please note that the job is no longer active!

This research aims at analyzing the policies and interventions promoted by the government and the international development actors for the fight against HIV/AIDS and for rural development in Mozambique. Moving from an historical and political analysis of the Mozambican context, the research will specifically focus on the strategies aimed at reducing gender inequalities and contributing to women’s empowerment in rural areas. The research is framed within a wider debate - that has been fuelled by international organizations, scholars and policy-makers - on the key role of rural communities for local economic development, poverty reduction and fighting HIV/AIDS. The community-based approach, however, might entrench existing economic, social and gendered hierarchies and power relations where there is a failure to recognize that communities are neither homogeneous nor egalitarian structures, but sites of multiple and overlapping interests.
