This research program is aimed at developing feature-based analysis techniques for audio and acoustic signals, with applications to quality assessment of musical instruments.
The work will initially focus on determining which audio features can be adopted and trained for extracting information on vibrational and acoustic properties of musical instruments and of the testing environment. Once the features are identified, feature-based analysis methods will be developed, based on machine learning techniques. This will enable the generation of new descriptors at a higher level of abstraction and semantics, which are expected to be more suitable for the purpose at hand. These features will then be correlated with measurements and evaluations conducted on musicians and listeners. As part of this work, solutions will be studied and developed to implement the information gathering methodology, and the related target applications scenarios, and specific demonstrations will be developed.
