The development of effective therapy for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is one of the greatest successes of clinical oncology, with event-free survival (EFS) in > 80% of them. However, cure rate for adults with ALL remain relatively low, at only 30 to 40% EFS.
In the recent years, interest has been focused on the understanding the biological factors influencing the outcome of adolescents and young adults with ALL, in the attempt to improve the current therapeutic strategies in this age group.
Recent reports on ALL in adolescents, indicate that these patients (age 15-21 years) treated with pediatric ALL trials have a significant prognostic advantage (5-year EFS 67%), compared with those enrolled in adult protocols (5-year EFS 40%).
