Institutions, Entrepreneurship, and the Economic Performance of Transition Economies

Please note that the job is no longer active!

The present research is aimed at identifying additional plausible explanations of the diversity of economic performances in transition economies. Unlike most recent studies that consider just one source of increased productivity, namely the institution, the idea is to consider three determinants of productivity growth: institutions, entrepreneurship and productive capabilities. Following North (1990) an institution is defined as a set of rules that constrain human behaviors and as a device to stabilize expectations to coordinate “millions of people in a coherent order” (Lachmann 1970). Entrepreneurship is in turn the factor that combines and reshuffles production factors in production units (Lachmann 1978[1956]). Finally, productive capabilities are routinized combinations of practical knowledge possessed by many individuals in the society, which shape the path of development for an enterprise or an economy (Nelson and Winter 1982).
