The present project proposal aims at investigating a topic that so far has never been studied by historiographical literature by employing a systematic approach: the relationship between Giacomo Casanova's literary works and epistolography. The research project is composed of three sections: 1. scholarly (cataloguing and chronological ordering of Casanova's epistolary corpus) 2. theoretical (analysis of the function of epistolary form in Casanova's literary modus operandi ) 3. cultural-historical (contextualization within the epistolary tradition of the Enlightenment period). The final outcome of the research would be the submission of a new critical edition – based on innovative scientific criteria and on a comprehensive literature analysis and review – of the letters written by one of the most outstanding author of the European literature of the Eighteenth century.
