The candidate will choose some dedicated crop biomasses cultivated in the field experiment based on the agronomic characteristics and dry biomass yield. Selected biomasses will be characterized by physical-chemical analysis (ST, SV, ash, TOC, TKN, C/N, proteins, lipids, structural carbohydrates). Then they will be subjected to physical-chemical pre-treatments (steam explosion, microwave, NaOH), in order to increase their biodegradability. Pre-treatment effectiveness will be evaluated by quantification of released sugars and inhibitors and through anaerobic incubation. The incubation will be carried out under mesophilic conditions at standard organic load. Gasses (i.e. CH4, CO2, H2) produced during the digestion will be quantified by microGC analysis and the balance of the process will be assessed by specific analysis (i.e. volatile fatty acids, alkalinity, pH).
