The overall objective of this study is the advancement of knowledge on the biodiversity of marine microalgae and their spatial and temporal distribution through the integration of metagenomic data and morphology. The scientific activity will focus on the analysis of available sequences for phylogenetic markers obtained from DNA and RNA clone libraries and 454 environmental sequences in the context of different national and international projects (BIOMARKS, TARA, VECTOR, SESAME), and on the production and analysis of additional sequences from samples collected in the waters of the Gulf of Naples. The molecular data will be compared and validated with morphological studies conducted on the same samples, as well as through the production of new sequences from organisms brought into cultivation. Data analysis will include the study of environmental parameters, in order to define also the ecological context of the biodiversity. Database of sequences and images will be built.
