The research project is about the preparation and characterization of second generation thin film solar cells such as CdTe/CdS and CZTS/CdS. This type of devices has the lowest cost per watt available and it is able to strongly reduce the cost of the energy produced so that it results to be in competition with the conventional energy sources. The work will be about optimizing the growth of polycrystalline thin films forming the solar cells. The finished device will be analyzed by means of current-voltage and capacitance-voltage measurement. The single layers will be characterized by optical and atomic force microscopy and by different spectroscopy techniques (among them X-ray diffraction). Our laboratory has optimized a technique to deposit thin films on polymers, allowing the preparation of flexible and lightweight solar cells that represent the new frontier in the next photovoltaic generation. The fabrication process will be than optimized on this new substrate.
