The research project aims to study the problem of causation it tort law, its nature and its most recent developments. A particular attention must be paid to the idea, recently adopted by the Principles of European Tort Law, according to which, under certain circumstances, an activity can be «regarded as a cause to the extent corresponding to the likelihood that it may have caused the victim’s damage». Such a principle, which is based on the concept of «likelihood of causal contribution», is still far from being commonly accepted and is subject to a wide variety of potential criticism. The research aims to explore such a principle, its practical implications and the impact that its adoption may produce on the tort legal systems both in Italy and abroad.
