The study of light propagation in highly diffusive media is a valuable tool to explore non-invasively biological tissue. The photons injected into a point on the surface and detected at a certain distance from it carry information about the properties of the medium in terms of composition of its constituents (light absorption) and its microstructure (light diffusion). The time-resolved analysis of the propagation of photons in the medium offers the possibility to decouple the effects of light absorption from those of light diffusion. Time-resolved spectroscopy of broadcasting media has shown important potential applications in various fields such as optical mammography, detection of osteoporosis and, although at early experimental level, for cardiac surgery. The project is intended to set up a system for diffuse reflectance spectroscopy in the range 1100-1300 nm.
