Chemical mimicry in the Maculinea butterflies

Please note that the job is no longer active!

Maculinea butterflies are obligate myrmecophilous insects and they need to be adopted by workers of Myrmica ants to complete their life cycle. The complex biology of these lycaenids has to be taken into account for implementing appropriate conservation strategies. In other words, to guarantee the survival of Maculinea populations is necessary to preserve not only their habitat and foodplants, but also the host ants. We will endeavor to: 1)survey the host-specificity and the geographical variability of chemical profiles of Maculinea Italian populations, in particular of Habitat Directive species (M. arion, M. teleius) 2)clarify the mechanism at the base of the chemical communication between host and parasite

Please note that the full description may be available in the national language since some job boards have their own publication policy. Thank you for your understanding!
