The increasing availability of 3D content creates the need for new human-machine interfaces that can handle them in a more intuitive and natural way than the one possible with traditional devices such as the mouse or the keyboard. The target of the project is the design and implementation of a man-machine interface for the exploration of three-dimensional representations using only the direct interpretation of the gestures of the hand without using any kind of controller. There are two main problems to be solved: the implementation of a system for the acquisition of 3D movements of the hand and for their automatic recognition and the definition and testing of an adequate natural gesture alphabet. In particular with regard to the acquisition of the hand movement it is necessary to identify the position of the hand and the orientation of its various parts that will be achieved by using both cameras to 3D sensors.
