In Lithuania the ESF is helping disadvantaged families to help themselves
The St. Anthony’s day centre in the city of Kretinga is launching an ESF project to support some 200 people from socially disadvantaged families. Working with groups of 10 people, each will receive 6 months training in computer literacy and foreign language skills as well as more vocational courses such as accountancy and car mechanics. The aim is to boost skills such that after the project they can go on to find work in their chosen professions or to train further. According to project manager Margarita Lizdenyte the aim is to teach people to be independent and not to rely on state support. Funding is also available to renovate the day centre – adding a canteen and laundry – and the project will provide jobs for 24 people at the centre.
