Business associations in Sweden are taking steps to predict and close skills gaps
Business associations in Östhammar in Sweden want to form a skills forum where businesses, educational institutions, government agencies and politicians can match skills and training to employment needs. The aim is to get a firmer grip on skills supply in the face of looming shortages in several professions in coming years. “Instead of guessing about needs, the companies will make an annual inventory of their future needs for skills and then they will work together to find ways to fill those needs,” says Kirsi Mikkonen of the ESF-funded Corporate Initiative project. By bringing together businesses, education institutions and employment services, the promoters hope to boost employment and make the Östhammar region an attractive destination for existing and new staff.
