Building social success

In Slovenia, the ESF is supporting social businesses with start-up funding

Slovenia’s Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs has selected 17 businesses which, over the next two to three years, will train and employ members of disadvantaged groups, including immigrants, people with disabilities, Roma, and older job-seekers, among others. These social enterprises – selected by public tender and co-funded by the ESF – will receive EUR 4.5 million in total. There is a wide variety of activities planned: for example, older women job-seekers making reusable shopping bags, former drug addicts preparing commercial advertisements, disabled people working as land surveyors, and homeless people running a fair trade shop that will sell domestic products. This new initiative is based on an earlier one launched three years ago which proved a success – with eight of its nine social enterprises still in operation.
