A training programme for medical professionals in Latvia is being expanded to meet the demand for new and better skills

Owing to rising demand, Latvia is expanding a training programme for medical staff that has seen 35 000 doctors, nurses and others take part so far. The aim is to offer medical professionals the opportunities to bring their skills up to date and up to world standards. Much of the training is achieved through short-course programmes – some given by foreign specialists – for which there is massive interest. In addition, medical professionals can apply to go abroad to gain experience and bring new knowledge back to share with their colleagues; and 436 have done so with visits to hospitals and clinics in other European countries. Started in 2008, the ESF co-funded training programme, one of the largest in Latvia, is free of charge for participants.
