Putting veterans back on track

An ESF skills project for ex-military offenders wins award in the UK

A project in northern England for helping ex-military offenders to adjust to civilian life and join the workforce has won an ‘equal opportunities’ award from the ESF in the UK. Former members of the armed forces – some suffering from stress disorders – can often encounter difficulties in fitting in, leading to social exclusion, housing problems and substance abuse. To help them, the Northumbria Probation Trust is running the Veterans Employment Skills Project (VESP) which works with ex-military offenders to overcome the personal obstacles they face to getting jobs – including addressing behavioural and job-related skills. The award judges praised the research undertaken into veterans’ needs, the strong one-to-one approach and the excellent results of the project – of 35 participants, 27 have received training awards and eight are already in jobs.
