In Finland, the ESF is helping bring job-seekers and employers together in the fight against long-term unemployment

In the West Uusimaa region in southern Finland, unemployment has doubled since 2008. To combat this, six municipalities have joined in a recruitment project which brings together job-seekers and potential employers. Coaching, work experience and internships are among the tools available to build bridges into working life. One expected outcome of the project is better co-operation between municipalities and businesses in the fight against long-term unemployment. “SMEs that don’t have personnel administration will benefit most from the project,”explains project worker Tiina Lindholm. In SMEs – which create the most jobs – job vacancies are often not advertised through employment services, although qualified workers are typically found that way. The project also offers training courses to improve the skills of new employees for their new job.
