An ESF project in Bulgaria is building a cadre of trained foster families
The foster-care team in the Bulgarian municipality of Veliko Tarnovo is seeing rising interest from potential foster parents as the ESF co-funded ‘I have a family too’ project reaches out to more people in the region. A new training course for potential fosterers started in July and includes themes of particular importance for fostering in Bulgaria – such as the development of children raised in institutions. In addition, the application and screening procedure for potential fosterers has been speeded up and monthly subsidies for fosterers are now above the minimum wage. Fostering is a relatively new activity in Bulgaria – but Veliko Tarnovo already has ten active foster families and is working to train more.
