Preserving special theatres

23/02/2012

Several small theatres in the Netherlands are studying cost-saving measures through shared facilities

In the town of Baarn in the Netherlands, the local ‘Playbox’ theatre is taking steps to preserve its particular artistic identity while lowering its costs in difficult times. Together with several small theatres in other towns, and helped by a specialised consultant, the Playbox is using ESF funding to investigate whether sharing certain non-core resources – such as some technical services, accounting, catering and marketing – would help the theatres reduce their costs and fare better in lean times. The aim is to preserve the valued individual and local character of each theatre – popular with theatre audiences and school and amateur theatre groups –by preserving buildings and artists while, at the same time, lowering costs.
