The ESF Conference on the ESF Contribution to Labour Market Activation took place in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8, Ireland, on 28-29 May 2013.

The role of the ESF in closing the ‘skills gap’ by giving job-seekers the modern skills and qualifications is now crucial to tackling the unemployment crisis we are experiencing in Europe. This conference on the ESF Contribution to Labour Market Activation is therefore pertinent at this time and also in the context of achieving the EU2020 objectives. Increasing activation of the labour force is always a priority for ESF and will be directly linked to key investment priorities in the next programming period of 2014-2020.

This Conference sought to explore the role of the ESF in activating the labour force and the role of identifying the links between labour market skills and labour market needs. Ireland demonstrated examples of programmes it has implemented to activate and upskill the labour force including some that have been co-funded from the ESF. Workshops took place to facilitate discussion on labour market activation through tertiary education, tailoring vocational training programmes to future skills needs and the activation of youth at highest risk of social exclusion.
