A pay-what-you-want café provides training for people looking for a job in catering
A cafe in Gravesend, in the UK, allows customers to pay just what they can afford or what they think a meal is worth. It is taking on 16 unemployed people and providing on-the-job training in food hygiene and customer service thanks to the help of ESF funding. The training provider – The Learning Shop, Bluewater – guarantees all trainees an interview in a local shopping-centre restaurant.
The café is intended as a learning tool, not a profit-making machine, explains Training Manager, Marie Goddon. “It will give them work experience and confidence – having probably been out of work for a while, this will make them feel better prepared to go back to work.”
