Helping young job-seekers

ESF helps reduce youth unemployment in Finland

In the Finnish city of Vantaa, youth unemployment fell by 19% last year and is still falling in 2012, largely thanks to the Petra project launched by the city in March 2010. The project focuses on providing better help to under 25-year-old job-seekers who receive personal, active guidance every two to three weeks. “We get involved right at the beginning and help the young person to become more active, so that he or she can take part in workshops, do an internship, study or enter the labour market,” says Anu Tirkkonen, Director of Vantaa employment service, who explains that earlier, less successful efforts lacked the resources of the ESF co-funded Petra project and had little impact on youth unemployment.
