Recognising soft skills

The Czech Republic is taking steps to raise the profile of ‘informal education’ and the skills that go with it

A programme to support ‘informal education’ in the Czech Republic is getting ESF support for its ‘quality and competitiveness’ initiative. It involves supporting soft skills – such as life-coaching – that are practised outside the normal school and family environment. Examples include supporting young workers, and providing assistance in dealing with public services.

A leading objective of the project is to achieve broader recognition of informal education and to set quality criteria. In support of this initiative, 30 major employers, educators, NGOs and public services signed a declaration on the benefits of informal education in the field of youth work at an international conference, the ‘Forum for innovative learning’, held in June 2013 in Bratislava.
