EkoBiz is an EU funded project that aims to tackle the issue of high youth unemployment in the Split-Dalmatia region.
It aims to attract young people to organic entrepreneurship by raising awareness of local opportunities in the industry. The project provides training and business support to young entrepreneurs while promoting the consumption of organic produce in the local community.
Due to depopulation, the proportion of farmers under the age of 40 is at just 6% of the farming population. This is also due to the lack of aawareness about sustainable food consumption and the benefits of organic production in the local area.
EkoBiz aims to overcome the missed opportunity by attracting young people back into rural areas with the promise of entrepreneurial opportunities in organic farming.
The use of education, business support and development of entrepreneurial skills at an early age works to improve knowledge transfer in the organic sector. Training and business support has been delivered to 70 young people to date. They have been provided with advice and guidance regarding their business plans and applications to the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
