Reducing Roma drop-outs

ESF community centres are helping young Roma to complete their education and get new opportunities

In the past, Roma families in Slovakia could be rather distrustful about the benefits of four community centres set up with ESF support. However, their doubts are disappearing as the centres prove successful in improving the prospects for Roma children, with fewer school drop-outs and better exam results. “The only way to save Roma children from the hard life of their uneducated and unemployed parents is to ensure that they get a good-quality education and are protected from the bad influences – for example, drug abuse – found in marginalised settlements,” explained Peter Kulifaj, coordinator of the social integration programmes for the centres. His teams are helping teach some 500 Roma children and organise out-of-school activities.
