Racing against illiteracy

Jesuits run marathon to combat illiteracy in Malta

The Jesuits and Friends’ marathon team will be walking and running a Malta Half Marathon and Walkathon to raise funds to break down illiteracy barriers for 1000 men and women in Malta. The money raised will contribute to the costs of reprinting the award-winning Iċ-Ċavetta Maltese Literacy Toolkit, which was developed by the Jesuit-run Paulo Freire Institute (PFI) and initially funded by the ESF. The toolkit offers a Maltese literacy aid to adults and young people with low levels of literacy and facing social exclusion and difficulties in finding jobs. The upgraded toolkit is on offer to organisations involved in combating illiteracy. Pauline Bartolo of the Jesuits’ Development Office said: “Our aim is to fund 1000 toolkits, which will enable 1000 adults or young people to read and write. It is a beautiful and invaluable gift which will open up a world of opportunities to so many individuals.”
