The city of Hamburg is taking steps to recognise the formal qualifications of immigrants and boost their job prospects

“We’re not just talking about integration, we are acting on it,” explained Hamburg Senator Detlef Scheele on the launch of a new project to help up to 100 people with immigrant backgrounds to have their qualifications refreshed and recognised – such that they can compete equally in the local jobs market. Immigrants often face the problem that their qualifications, awarded in their country of origin, are not recognised in Germany, thus reducing their job prospects. This new ESF co-funded project, managed by the Chamber for Crafts in Hamburg, is assessing these qualifications individually, providing refresher training where needed to ensure comparability, and then awarding the official recognition that boosts employability and allows participants to exercise their chosen professions just like everyone else.
