In Cyprus, ESF funding is helping boost skills in the tourism sector by offering training in the off-season periods

The increasingly seasonal nature of employment in the Cypriot tourism industry discourages young people from entering this important sector, as regular spells of unemployment – when hotels close for the winter – do little for workers’ ambitions. In response, the Cypriot government and the Higher Hotel Institute are renewing an ESF co-funded project to use this ‘dead’ period to boost employees’ skills and development. The EUR 612 000 budget will encourage lifelong learning by offering training and education opportunities, thus reducing seasonality in employment and increasing productivity.
