In Finland, an innovative circus is helping disadvantaged groups build self-esteem by joining in

Launched in 2011, Circus Magenta is a non-profit association in Finland that gives new experiences to children and young people who need support. It stems from an earlier ESF-funded ‘Social Circus’ project and the aim is to make it a regular event on the circus scene in Finland, with its services being commissioned by local authorities. Recently, Circus Magenta was awarded a local-authority-sponsored award for its support to special needs groups and multiculturalism – the Uusimaa prize. Magenta operates in youth groups, children’s nurseries and family rehabilitation centres, attracting some 300 participants a week. They participate in circus training events to build teamwork, communication and social skills and help people overcome disadvantages – as well as discovering juggling and acrobatic talents they did not know they had!
