Mastering handicrafts

Latvia is using ESF funds to help young people gain professional qualifications

Young people in Latvia are being offered financial support to take part in ESF co-funded training programmes to become craftsmen and women in a variety of professional fields. Scholarships are available to 2000 young people to master the skills of one of 54 professional crafts through some 94 vocational education programmes for 17-25 year-olds. Cooking, welding, real estate, veterinary assistant, railway locomotive technician, forestry worker – these are just some of the career paths on offer. While aimed at young people with a secondary education, there are also opportunities for the lower qualified. In its third year, the programme has already demonstrated that a large number of participants continue in their chosen craft professions after completing their courses.
