Ljungnäsvillan is giving people who are long-term unemployed, new to Sweden, or born abroad, better employment chances. The project, based in a country house by the sea in Småland, offers on-the-job training in restaurant and café work, organic farming, property maintenance, and the conference and rental business, as well as vital language skills. “In Småland the number of jobs in industry has fallen sharply in recent years. So the region has got to work towards restructuring the job market since the demand for labour in services and health care is growing,” says project manager Elisabeth Stake.
In Sweden today, more than one in five foreign-born women of working age do not have a job. That's why the Swedish Public Employment Service has set up Mirjam. Mirjam’s small coaching groups, at six locations across Eastern Central Sweden, provide job-related guidance and inspiration for newly-arrived refugee women. During a ten-week course, participants learn about the Swedish labour market, study opportunities, financial support for studies, rights in society, and work/life balance. They also study Swedish, as language is one of the biggest barriers to work.
Gävleborg in Sweden has high rates of unemployment and is benefiting from the Youth Employment Initiative, under a project called Young in Gävleborg. As the name suggests, the project targets young people aged 15 to 24 who are not in employment or education. Ten project groups across the region, offer participants coaching and job counselling, as well as the opportunity to take part in motivational activities and internships. Working one-to-one with individuals, but encouraging teamwork and group activities, Young in Gävleborg helps young people to learn important life skills.

Yalla Sofielund, a partnership between the City of Malmö and the social enterprise Yalla Trappan, has been designed to support people predominantly in the city’s Sofielund neighbourhood. Project Secretary Maria Svenning explains why: "Sofielund has long remained something of a problem area in Malmö, with poverty, crime and social exclusion. At the same time, it's an area where a lot is going on in different cultural and community associations, and where people show a high level of commitment."

Taking on an internship is one thing, but travelling to another country to do it? That's life-changing! And it's this extra level of challenge that makes Active Mobility successful. The project, run by the Activa Foundation with the Swedish Employment Office, Social Insurance Office and six county municipalities, is aimed at supporting young people with disabilities to find work, by offering accompanied internships in other countries.
Collaborations help immigrants to find work fast (17/05/2017)
A collaboration between adult education providers in Sweden and SFI, the national free Swedish language course, is hoping to shorten the time it takes for immigrants to learn the language and find sustainable work. YFI integrates vocational classes with Swedish language training to offer a combined study programme for new arrivals, immigrants and long-term unemployed immigrants. Integrating the studies in this way not only holds participants’ interest over the course of the training, but saves time.
